Hand held weapons are a very big part of Japan, in the Meieval times.
Once the cod was changed from saurai to Bushido (way of the worrier) they turnes to swords, and away from bows. Katana, wakizashi and tanto were very popular. The servant of a samuria that carried a Katana help the Katana when the Samuria was indoors.

The katana was unlike the wakizashi because it would be worn at all times. A samurai would wear it from when he woke up, to when he went to sleep, and he would sleep with the wakizashi under his pillow. The Wakizashi was used when the katana was not available.

The tanto was a small knife, rarely used. It was mostly carried by Samurai but a few other people aswell. Including woman, for self defence against animals or dangerous people. Up until the 16th century it was common for a samuria to carry a Tachi (anouther type of sword and a Tanto. Instead of a Katana and a Wasizashi.
Ninjas likes the tanto for it was light weight and was used for assassination.
